A little bit about me...

I am an author, travel photojournalist, voice over artist, publisher, a proud mum, and an occasional epic cake baker (or so my friends tell me).

I have travelled widely in the Polar Regions – my first years were spent living with a remote tribe of Inuit in Northwest Greenland (my wonderful father was polar explorer Sir Wally Herbert). I have spent months in the Himalaya, ventured into the Empty Quarter of the deserts of Oman, ridden through the Grand Canyon and experienced, briefly, what it is like to be a Geisha in Japan.

My first book The Explorer’s Daughter, published by Penguin, was chosen by the BBC as Book of the Week, with excerpts read daily by Emelia Fox. It is currently featured on the Edexcel school curriculum. My other published books include Heart of the Hero and In Search of the South Pole. My latest offering – Explorer’s Sketchbooks – is to be released later this month.  All have been translated into several languages. More on writing here.

... And a bit more ...

As a travel photo-journalist, my articles and photographs have been featured in magazines and newspapers worldwide, and I have acted as judge for the Guardian Travel Writing Competition three years running.

As a voice artist I have voiced documentaries, marketing and advertising campaigns for global brands such as Prada and the BBC, and have been the in-car navigation voice for Audi and BMW.

When not knocking about in the polar regions, my husband Huw and I live in a ramshackle old house perched on a cliff-top with our daughter Nell. It’s idyllic in the summer, but less so in the winter when storms accelerate towards us over a roaring ocean, frequently ripping off parts of the roof. I am certain the only reason the house is still standing is because of the packed bookshelves that line every wall.
